Seven Card Stud Starting Hands:
Guest Author
The best seven card stud starting hands would be those that are going to help you make a straight or better.
The quality of your seven card starting hands is best decided by checking the other cards that are displayed on the board. For instance if you are holding a pair of nines, and you can see that one of the player’s also has a nine, then the value of your pair comes down considerably. Similarly, if you are trying to make a straight, with say, three consecutive cards – 4-5-6 and if you see another player holding two fours and two sevens, again the value of your hand will suffer the same fate.
The starting hand list in seven card stud is quite small with trips being the best in the game. Trip aces, kings and queens are the favorite and most powerful going down all the way to trip twos as a starting hand. Three connecting cards of the same suit making a straight follow closely to the trips. Next come the three cards of the same suit for a flush. Top pairs of kings, queens and aces followed by three high cards that make a straight are also considered good. You can always hit a pair if you do not hit the straight.
These are considered the strongest and a most playable hands in seven card stud. It is better not to play anything below these hands, as it would simply prove fruitless. Always ensure that you are aware of the other cards being played on the board so that you can gauge your chances of hitting the hand you are looking for. There is no point chasing a diamond flush if you see that your opponents are playing diamonds in their cards. Also, if the cards that you need to make a powerful hand are in some other player’s pile, then it is better to revise your strategy.
